Materials and functions of gland packings
How do gland packings work and how are they constructed? The sealing element within the gland packing is the packing itself. It consists of tightly interwoven yarns, some of which have been impregnated. The impregnation is intended to seal any voids in the packing weave. This creates an ideal cross-sectional density, which prevents any leakage paths through the packing. Depending on the requirements and application, the impregnation also promotes heat dissipation, improves running characteristics or increases resistance to various media.
Gland packings are pressed firmly into the installation space. To do this, the packing is first cut into packing rings, which are then inserted into the packing chamber and clamped axially using screws or additional springs. The radial expansion then causes the packing to press against the wall of the ring space, sealing the medium radially almost completely. Even under constant temperature and pressure fluctuations, they retain their elasticity.
Depending on the gland packing, the yarn used is made from various materials: At thoenes ®, you can obtain gland packings made from components such as aramid (P640, -643, -644, -645), cellulose (C609/639), ramie (N506), blended yarn (P605), polyimide (P637/638), PTFE (P609/oiled = 610), PTFE with graphite (P639), Novoloid (P646), pure graphite foil threads (P666) or carbon (P653). New to our range is our FDA-approved PTFE yarn (P608 and oiled=P611). Only the yarn

Graphite gland packings are in particularly high demand. Our graphite packing is braided from flexible graphite foil strands and then subjected to intensive shaping. The additional impregnation helps prevent corrosion. Depending on which other materials are combined with the graphite, our graphite gland packing possesses different properties. Generally, the gland packings are resistant to pressure, alcohols, bases, oils, petrol and ketones, and have a low coefficient of friction as well as high cross-sectional density and structural strength.
