Insulating and sealing cords as well as packing
Sealing cords are adaptable and, depending on the manufacturing method, flexible and elastic, giving them the ideal properties for sealing joints simply, effectively and efficiently. Depending on the material, a sealing cord offers high temperature and water resistance and can, for example, also be used to seal furnaces. At thoenes ®, you can find durable insulation and sealing cords as well as sealing packs in various diameters, shapes and materials to suit your requirements.

Sealing cord – materials and functions
A sealing cord or insulating cord can be used in both high-temperature and low-temperature environments, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. It can be used not only as a seal or insulation but also for filling joints. Sealing cords are characterised above all by their high resistance to water and temperature. thoenes ® offers you cords made from various materials and in different lengths and sizes. Our products are available in round and square shapes, or can be manufactured in rectangular shapes for you on request. Their functions vary depending on their composition. We also manufacture special rings, cut-to-size pieces or sealing cords entirely to your specifications.
The thoenes ® glass fibre sealing cords consist of glass staple fibre yarns that run parallel and are braided concentrically. The material ensures high flexibility, good chemical resistance and low electrical conductivity. They are particularly well suited for unpressurised, static sealing applications with low mechanical stress, such as sealing lids, dust collectors, joints and for pipe insulation. The glass fibre sealing cords also have a temperature resistance of 550 °C.
In our online shop, you will also find glass fibre cords made from other materials, such as terry cloth, E-glass and C-glass fibre. If the material you require for your application is not available, please do not hesitate to contact us.
We also offer ceramic yarn cords (R128, K280, K274), which are reinforced with either brass wire or chrome steel wire. The sealing cords are very soft and textile-like. Thanks to their low thermal conductivity, they offer excellent insulating properties and can withstand temperatures of up to 1100 °C. They are also resistant to acids (except phosphoric and hydrofluoric acid), molten metals, fats and weak alkalis. The ceramic yarn cords are particularly suitable for sealing and insulating applications, including boiler and chimney doors, chimney flues, expansion joints and furnaces.
Belcotex cords consist of non-combustible textile fibres with a temperature resistance of up to 1050 °C. This type of sealing cord is often chosen as an alternative to products made from bio-soluble yarn or ceramic yarn. We will be happy to provide you with a quote at any time upon request. It is also possible to order a sealing cord with various coatings such as graphite, PTFE, silicone or polymer dispersion (plastic finish).
Sealing packs – materials and functions
At thoenes ® you can purchase a range of sealing packs to suit your needs. These are available in various materials and properties, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. Sealing packs are particularly well suited for static applications such as sealing doors, joints or heat exchangers. If the materials or dimensions you require are not listed in the shop, please feel free to contact us.
The glass fibre packs consist of textured, twisted E-glass, which ensures high storage volume and good insulation properties. Fibreglass packs therefore have very high mechanical strength and are temperature-resistant up to 550 °C in continuous use; they can also be used at up to 650 °C for short periods. They are also resistant to fats, oils and low-concentration acids and alkalis (excluding phosphoric and hydrofluoric acids). These dense packings are suitable, for example, for chimney, stove and boiler doors
,
as well as inspection hatches and for wrapping exhaust systems.
Biosoluble packings are made from approximately 80% biosoluble yarn and approximately 20% organic fibres, reinforced with glass fibres or chrome wire. They possess high abrasion resistance, temperature resistance (between 650 °C and 1000 °C depending on the material) and dimensional stability, as well as low thermal conductivity, and are non-flammable. Our bio-soluble packing is resistant to fats, solvents, oils, organic acids and weak alkalis (excluding phosphoric and hydrofluoric acids). It is used in furnace reformers, boilers, furnace car seals and door seals.
Ceramic yarn packings are made from ceramic staple fibre yarn, which is extremely soft, textile-like and supple. The glass yarn and chrome wire cores used ensure that strength is maintained. The materials have low thermal conductivity, which forms the basis for excellent insulating properties. Furthermore, the packing is temperature-resistant up to 1000 °C and resistant to liquid metals, greases, weak alkalis, oils and acids (except for hydrofluoric and phosphoric acid). Similar to other packings, Keramgarn packings can be used in many static applications.
In comparison, silicon oxide fibre packings consist of twisted silicon oxide staple fibre yarn and contain no organic compounds. These sealing packings are characterised by their resistance to organic compounds and acids, as well as their safe use at high temperatures. The material is harmless to health and does not form any toxic decomposition products. Silicon oxide fibre packing is used, for example, between tunnel furnace cars, for sealing inspection hatches, as a sealing and insulating material, and as a seal for chimney, furnace and boiler doors.
Sealing packs from thoenes ® are available in a wide variety of dimensions and materials, as well as in square, round or rectangular designs. Please feel free to contact us regarding any custom-made requirements.
